Issue 10 - March 2011
Hi everyone
Just a brief newsletter, but we wanted to let you know that we've got another fantastic networking event coming up on the 18th April. For this event, we've teamed up with our friends at NZIFST (New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology), to not only hear about Lion Nathan and how it launched Macs Isaacs Cider, but provide a great opportunity to network with a large group of innovators from the food and beverage industry.
You can find more details below as well as some interesting articles, including one by our very own Allan Anderson that was published in the latest PDMA global Visions magazine. And while you are there, check out the other articles in that issue or any of the other issues that are all freely accessible.
And lastly... we keep getting compliments on what we are trying to do with PDMA in New Zealand and the network we have created. However, as with any organisation like ours run by volunteers, to keep growing and provide greater value to our members, we need your help. So please read the first article below and if you are able to help us, we’d really appreciate it.
Cheers!

A call for helpers with PDMA-NZ
Since PDMA-NZ was formed in 2007 the organization has largely been in the hands of the same 4-5 people. Although we are just as enthusiastic about PDMA as we were 4 years ago, we recognize that for an organization to be sustained and grow it needs a regular injection of new blood and new ideas.
Moving forward we plan to have a core committee of 5-6 people, each with a specific portfolio:
• Marketing and promotion
• Communication
• Membership and Finances
• Events
• Links to PDMA internationally
• Education/certification
In each of these portfolios we would like to have 2-3 people (as appropriate) who will bring new ideas forward and actively work to make PDMA-NZ the focus for product development professionals.
ARE YOU KEEN TO BE MORE INVOLVED IN PDMA-NZ?
If so, contact Allan Anderson:

The Outstanding Corporate Innovator Award
Each year, PDMA runs a competition for the Outstanding Corporate Innovator Award (OCI). Over recent years this award has been won by a number of well known companies including Xerox, Harley Davison, DuPont and Eastman Kodak. To date, only one company outside the US has won the award.
Wouldn’t it be great to see a New Zealand company take out the OCI award for 2011 or 2012.
Following is an abstract from OCI section of the PDMA website http://pdma.org/recognition_oci.cfm.
“The Outstanding Corporate Innovator (OCI) Award is the only innovation award which recognizes sustained (5 or more years) quantifiable business results from new products and services.
For over twenty-three years, The Outstanding Corporate Innovator (OCI) Award selection process has provided an excellent mechanism for identifying companies which create and capture value through Product & Service Innovation in New Product Development. Past OCI Award winners have proven themselves exceptionally capable of integrating strategy, people, process, and technology to consistently transfer their creative ideas into successful new products.
The award was developed with two objectives. First, to identify and publicly recognize the excellence of companies that have been the most successful in continuously developing a stream of value creating new products and services. The second, and equally important, rationale for the award is to provide a learning vehicle for the sharing of the winning firm's individual best practices with PDMA's general membership.”

New Zealand - A hotbed of radical innovation. Surprising?...
New Zealand's impact on the world stage, economy, and its own region goes far beyond the country's size. In this article, Allan Anderson, president of the PDMA affiliate, explains some of the reasons for the country's uniqueness and pioneering spirit which have led it to embrace innovation in the past-and also today in terms of the more formal processes which have been developed during the past decades.
